Why the confusion exists
In India, most vendors — including some listed on our own comparison pages — market their product as an 'EMR' regardless of scope, because it's the most recognised term. That's usually fine in casual use, but the distinction matters when you're comparing what different software actually does.
EMR: Electronic Medical Record
An EMR is a digital version of a patient's chart, scoped to one practice or clinic group. It holds visit history, prescriptions, notes and reports for patients seen at that practice. Most software sold to Indian clinics — including Saaro Health — is an EMR in this narrow sense, even when its marketing says otherwise.
EHR: Electronic Health Record
An EHR implies a record built to move between providers — designed from the start to be shared, not just stored. This is closer to what India's Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is building nationally: a patient's ABHA-linked record that can, with consent, be viewed by any provider they've authorised. An individual clinic's software becomes part of that ecosystem when it supports ABDM properly, but the clinic-side software itself is usually still functioning as an EMR.
HIS: Hospital Information System
A HIS is broader again — it covers hospital-wide operations, not just clinical records: ward and bed management, OT scheduling, inpatient billing, pharmacy and inventory at hospital scale. A clinic doesn't need most of this. Vendors like KareXpert and MocDoc, which lean hospital-style, sit closer to HIS territory than a typical clinic EMR does.
The practical distinction
- 1EMR: one practice's patient records.
- 2EHR: records designed to move between providers, with the patient's consent.
- 3HIS: whole-hospital operations, of which clinical records are one part.
Where Saaro Health sits
Saaro Health is an EMR for outpatient clinics — one to fifty locations — with ABDM/ABHA support that lets it participate in the wider EHR ecosystem when a patient consents to share their record. It is not a hospital information system and doesn't try to be.
