A Hospital Information System (HIS) is software that manages hospital-wide operations, not just clinical records: ward and bed management, operation theatre scheduling, inpatient admission and discharge, pharmacy and inventory at hospital scale, and often finance and HR modules alongside clinical documentation.
It's broader than an EMR by design — a HIS treats the medical record as one module among many. A standalone outpatient clinic or clinic chain, with no inpatient beds or operation theatre to schedule, typically doesn't need most of a HIS's scope, even a large one. Vendors positioned closer to hospital-style management, such as KareXpert and MocDoc, lean into HIS territory more than a typical clinic EMR.
Saaro Health is scoped as an EMR for outpatient clinics and clinic chains — it doesn't attempt inpatient or OT management, which keeps the product focused on what a clinic, as opposed to a hospital, actually runs day to day.
